When people ask why I became a teacher, I jokingly state that summers off are nice. This always gets a few chuckles and people who work all summer agree “Yeah that must be nice!”. Then I go in to say that my husband is a teacher so we both get to stay home with our kids and create memories, travel, sleep in, stay up late, and oh yeah enjoy our new pool. Then the conversation usually turns to the negatives and people will often tell me “Well I don’t know how you do it; I couldn’t deal with kids today all day like that”.
It is at that statement that I cringe. Sure the so called luxuries of teaching (summers, holidays etc) are great, but guys it is the kids. It has been and always will be about the kids. So the real reason I went into teaching? Here’s a hint, it’s about the kids. I grew up in a family of teachers with my parents serving their communities for over 30 years. I grew up with former students approaching my parents in public thanking them for their dedication, for never giving up on them, for making math fun and memorable, and for the positive experience. Because let’s face it, Maya Angelou said it best:
“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Right there. How you made people feel. That’s what teaching is all about. So growing up and seeing my parents make a positive difference inspired me to make people feel good. Students today struggle with so much and teachers, coaches, counselors can have a biggest impacts. Many sometimes think that the internet/social media is destroying young adults’ lives today. It is not. They are adapting to a new culture that we (hey 80s babies!) did grow up with. So don’t blame them for their use of Snapchat, that is their society today. It’s not wrong, just different.
So why am I ranting about how awesome teaching is on my photography blog? Because I want to teach what I love: photography! I can tutor you in Geometry too if you really want! But seriously, I want to be a mentor to those who are just starting out and be their cheerleader. I want to share what knowledge I have gleamed over the years and make others feel good about their passion and business. I want to connect with other local creatives who aren’t sure what to do next or how to take their business to the next level. It is just who I am, who I was raised to be, and who I always will be. A teacher.
